The artist has donated the entirety of his £25k award prize money to the trust for venues, which operates to preserve the United Kingdom's independent concert spaces.

He was presented with the prize on October 16 as his latest record the album was declared the top album of the last 12 months.

The musician has decided to donate the funds to the trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role small stages had in his beginning days.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the shows I performed around the region, and beyond, when I was just getting going," remarked Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these venues have permanently closed – about 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts like Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its efforts to help venues survive, by adding a small levy to their ticket costs, which benefits local stages.

He also joined in, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support numerous local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money supported venues that were dealing with possible closure due to difficulties caused by water damage, fires and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, court cases and neighbor objections.

Other venues received monetary aid in upgrading facilities and sound and lighting systems that helped musicians and fans.

"The notion that funds from shows in major spaces backs the independent spots, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just sensible," the star has commented.

Fender is among several artists to contribute his Mercury Prize winnings to worthy causes.

Back when the band received the prize in 1996 for their album their work, vocalist Jarvis Cocker announced that the act would donate their cash to the non-profit the charity.

In 2002, musician Ms Dynamite shared her award across a few charities, including the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also gave a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they required better apparatus," the artist told a publication.

Previously, they contributed their winnings to the local youth club that nurtured their band, alongside other local music groups.

And winners that year they gave their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was diagnosed the condition.

"The victory was sufficient," stated vocalist the singer. "The money was the extra but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our winning impacted another person's life."

Recently, the MVT announced it had protected a couple of small stages in the South East, by transferring them to community ownership.

One venue in that area and the other in the city were purchased under the community ownership program, which is backed by Arts Council England and supporters who purchase "shares" in the properties.
